Burning Man Art Comes to Vegas

The MantisOne of the many grace notes of Tony Hsieh’s ambitious Downtown Project is the integration of visual art into the Las Vegas community. Last year, the Project struck a first-of-its-kind deal with Burning Man to display art from the Burning Man festival once it concludes.

Separately, Hsieh bought sculptor Kirk Jellum’s 40×30 foot, fire-spewing “The Mantis,” a Burning Man fixture in 2011 and 2012. He’s installed it at the Container Park development at 7th & Fremont Streets. It was on prominent display at the inaugural Life Is Beautiful Festival, held October 26-27 across 15 blocks of downtown’s Fremont East District, which is when this photo was taken.
