Wooden Clothes Drying Rack

We used to hang our air-dry clothes on our bannister; we’re lucky to have several yards of flat bannisters around our upstairs stairwell. It worked fantastically for drying clothes. It did not work so fantastically for the finish on the bannisters, as it happened. We don’t have the outdoor space (nor the inclination) to hang clothes to dry outside, and so we began the search for an indoor laundry drying rack.

We used these criteria:

  • It had to be large enough to accommodate a basket’s worth of damp clothes
  • It had to be sturdy enough to accommodate the weight of a basket’s worth of damp clothes
  • Since we’d be using it on our landing, it had to be able to collapse into a compact size for storage when not in use
  • It had to be made of a rust-proof material, for its own longevity and to avoid soiling our clothes

After much searching, we settled on the Large Wooden Rack from Pennsylvania Woodworks. Among its features:

  • It provides 37 linear feet (about 10 meters) of drying space
  • It can support heavy loads
  • It stands over 4 feet tall, meaning the clothes have plenty of air, which speeds drying time
  • It collapses to just 7″ wide, making it easy to stow in our laundry room
  • It’s made of maple, so no chance of rust

We also like that it’s made in the US by a company dedicated to making laundry racks.
