Stop Asking “Is This Your First Time?”
Speaking as a consumer: “Is this your first time dining with us?” is never the right question. Neither is its hotel sibling, “Is this your first time staying with us?”
If the answer is No, you’ve just told a returning guest that their previous visits didn’t matter, that you didn’t read the guest notes, or that you failed to pay attention in pre-shift. Whatever the reason, from the guest’s side of the interaction, it’s a poor way for the experience to begin.
Even if the answer is Yes, there’s a much better way to ask.
“How familiar are you with our property?” or “Would you like me to walk you through our menu?” work as guest greetings for both the first-timer and the regular alike. The newcomer gets guidance. The regular gets to say, “We’ve got it, thanks, unless you’ve made any changes since last time we were here?”
A small change in language. A huge difference in how it lands.
