Are We Finally Entering the Post-Wallet World?
Yesterday Apple pushed us a step closer to something that not so long ago felt like science fiction: a post wallet world. It began rolling out US passport support in Apple Wallet, joining the digital drivers’ licenses already supported in more than a dozen states. We’re at the inflection point where for many, a physical wallet becomes optional rather than required.
I had a glimpse of that future in early 2023.
My husband dropped me at the airport for a business trip. I walked toward security, reached into my purse, and realized with dismay that my wallet was in another bag at home. No ID. No cards. Nothing.
But I did have my phone.
Without enough time to retrieve my wallet and still make it to my meeting across the country, I used CLEAR to get through security. My boarding pass was already on my phone. In Miami, I used Uber to get to the hotel. Once there, I showed the clerk my reservation in the Marriott Bonvoy app and the scans of my ID and credit card stored in my password manager. The next day I repeated the process to fly to my next stop (Orlando), where Bonvoy pushed a digital room key straight to my app. I charged meals to my room.
My husband arrived the following day with my wallet, but I’d already made it through three days, three airports and two hotels with nothing but my phone. At the time it felt extraordinary. Today it feels inevitable.
Are we truly in a post wallet world?
Of course, physical documents still matter. Batteries die. Phones get lost or stolen. Connections fail at the worst possible moment. Not everyone has a phone, or one with digital ID capabilities. There will always be scenarios where a physical ID or card is the safer (or only) route.
But after yesterday’s Apple Wallet update, it’s hard to miss where we’re headed. Digital IDs, payments, transportation, loyalty programs, and now passports are converging into a single device that never leaves our hands.
And circling back to a line my friend Gracelyn once shared with me, which got me through my original panic at the airport: “If it’s funny later, it’s funny now.” In this case, it also turned out to be a preview of a looking glass we’re stepping through today.
What does this all mean?
This shift will also reshape travel and hospitality.
- As more IDs, room keys, reservations, and payment methods move into Apple Wallet or companion apps, guests will expect a truly frictionless journey from airport to hotel.
- Fewer front desk lines, faster identity verification, and smoother in-destination experiences become the norm rather than the exception.
Brands that adapt early will gain an advantage, and those that don’t may feel increasingly out of step with what travelers now consider baseline convenience.
