Sony Invests in Cosm: A Bigger Immersive Strategy?
Interesting follow-up to my post from March: Yesterday’s announcement that Sony Pictures is making a $100 million strategic investment in Cosm adds another piece to the puzzle.
My original observation was that the National Hockey League (NHL) partnership wasn’t simply about replay or officiating. It established immersive-native production infrastructure across all 32 arenas.
Now Sony Pictures Entertainment enters the picture. Sony already has deep capabilities in sports technology (Hawk-Eye, Beyond Sports), production tools, imaging, and SPE has one of the world’s richest IP portfolios. Combined with Cosm’s capture, cloud production, and immersive exhibition capabilities, the synergy extends well beyond any single sport, fandom, or venue.
One announcement doesn’t define a strategy, but two strategically aligned announcements begin to reveal a direction.
